Advantages:
- Adjusts temperature and air humidity.
- Can resist heat, sparks and flames for a shorter period of time.
- Durable and rejects water.

Grain:
- The outermost layer of the skin.
- Soft.
- Durable.
- Rejects water.
- Stands up to approximately 80 degrees centigrade.

Split:
- Underside of the skin.
- Porous surface and absorbs therefore easier moisture.
- Rough, hence good grip.
- Thickness varies by a split of one or to layers.
- Stands up to approximately 100 degrees centigrade.

The three most common types of skin are:

Ox-hide:
- Tough. - Durable.
- Rejects water.
- Thickest type of leather.
- Good protection against heat.

Pigskin:
- Good ability to breathe.
- Soft.
- Becomes better soft again after being wet.
- Good finger sensitivity.

Goatskin:
- Strong skin.
- Extremely flexible.
- Approximately twice as strong as ox-hide when same thickness of skin.
- Because of these qualities very suitable for jobs that require good finger sensitivity.
